In the right hands, eyelid lift surgery (blepharoplasty) is a highly successful procedure to achieve a younger look without changing the unique facial characteristics that make you look like you. But what are the criteria for success, and how can you maximise your chances of a successful operation?
In this article, we have a detailed discussion with Consultant Ophthalmologist and Oculoplastic Surgeon Dr. Nick Koutroumanos, about what a successful operation means to his patients, and how he strives to ensure their satisfaction with the results.
What makes an eyelid lift surgery (blepharoplasty) successful?
Simply put, Dr Koutroumanos says that, “Success is that the patient is completely happy afterwards.”
For both men and women, this means that a youthful appearance is achieved in a way that is natural-looking and totally undetectable by others.
Accomplishing success like this requires that the expectations of both the patient and surgeon are fully aligned. Dr Nick puts a lot of time and effort into ensuring that he and his patients have the same vision of the result which he explains in further detail.
I had a blepharoplasty in February ’22 and Dr Koutroumanos did a great job. I still look like me, but I can now keep my eyes open without having to constantly pull up my eyebrows. I’m very happy with the result. Thank you!

How do you ensure that each blepharoplasty is successful?
“The only way to ensure a high success rate is to listen to what the patients want. You need to ensure that their expectations are totally aligned with what you can offer.” Dr Koutroumanos goes on to say, “that requires honesty from the patient, but it also requires huge honesty from your surgeon about what they can offer.”
Being honest about what a surgeon can offer relies heavily on their skill and experience, but it all starts with a detailed assessment.
Dr Koutroumanos’ first consultation for blepharoplasty is extremely thorough and includes reviewing past photos, taking very precise measurements under high magnification, performing a full eye examination, and listening intently to your specific concerns. After gathering all this data, he is able to provide an honest assessment of what can be achieved with surgery.
But the consultation doesn’t end at the first visit.
“I will always recommend another conversation prior to arranging the operation. This can either be virtually or in person. I don’t tend to plan any surgery unless we’ve had at least two opportunities to answer questions and align our expectations.”
This comprehensive approach is what enables Dr Koutroumanos to provide a top-notch service to his many happy patients.
Dr Koutroumanos was so amazing from start to finish. I received a blepharoplasty and a brow lift. He explained the procedure. He helped me understand the process that I would undergo. Very talented doctor and charismatic. Would highly recommend!

How likely is it that you need more than one blepharoplasty operation to achieve the desired look?
It is uncommon for patients to need more than one eyelid lift surgery, or blepharoplasty, to achieve their desired results.
Although some people may desire further refinements, Dr. Koutroumanos has a wealth of experience and knowledge in different blepharoplasty techniques which allows him to produce natural-looking results in a single procedure. In rare cases, he may perform a revision surgery once a year for his own patients, or up to once a month for patients who were referred to him after having their surgery performed elsewhere.
Due to having poor surgery in Turkey, Dr N Koutroumanos thankfully corrected the procedure. He and his team were very thoughtful and compassionate and I am grateful for his dedicated professionalism

How long does a successful eyelid lift surgery (blepharoplasty) last ?
Although no cosmetic procedure lasts forever, both men and women can typically expect to enjoy the results of a successful eyelid lift for 10 years or more. However, this can vary from person to person. Factors include age, overall health, sun exposure, smoking history, and even genes.
What should you look for in a surgeon for a successful blepharoplasty?
The two main areas you should focus on are the specific training and experience with eyelid surgery, and the experience of actual patients.
These two things will ensure that your surgeon is not only capable of providing the best outcome, but is also an active listener who is willing to work with you to achieve a result that you are happy with.
Nick is a skilled surgeon and has a great way with his patients. Throughout, from the first consultation to the follow up, he has been patient and answered all my questions. He was able to put me at ease throughout. I would highly recommend Nick.
