How to ensure eyelid lift success

Eyelid lift surgery (blepharoplasty): Addressing the top 5 fears

Although always looking tired may be affecting you in both your personal and professional life, you might still be hesitant to have a surgical procedure like a blepharoplasty performed around your eyes.

This hesitation is completely understandable, and we hope to reassure you today as we address some of the common fears about eyelid lift surgery with Dr Nick Koutroumanos, Consultant Ophthalmologist, head of the Oculoplastics service at the Royal Free Hospital, and founder of Clinic LOOP.

  1. Can my eyes be damaged during a blepharoplasty procedure?

  2. Can my vision become blurred or damaged with eyelid lift surgery?

There is no need to worry about the risks of eyelid lift surgery when it is performed by an experienced Oculoplastic Surgeon.

As a qualified Ophthalmologist and triple-fellowship trained Oculoplastic Surgeon, Dr Nick Koutroumanos has the necessary expertise to safely assess and treat both the eyes and eyelids. His background in comprehensive eye care allows him to perform surgery with almost zero risk of damaging the eyes.

Before the surgery, Dr Koutroumanos also performs a full eye assessment to address any concerns you have about your vision before the operation. You can trust that you will receive the highest level of care and safety when you choose a surgeon who operates exclusively on the eyes and eyelids.

My cataract and blepharoplasty operations have been a resounding success. With my eyelids lifted, my daughter tells me I look ten years younger. It’s as if I have had a mini facelift.

3. Will I look like I’ve had surgery after my blepharoplasty?

“This is one of the top concerns my patients have when considering eyelid lift surgery,” shares Dr Koutroumanos. “Addressing this concern is a top priority in my practice.”

“My philosophy for any type of eyelid surgery is focused on the natural restoration of the area around the eyes. I carefully and individually plan conservative interventions that aim to preserve personal facial characteristics.”

“The goal of facial surgery, including eyelid surgery, should be to enhance one’s own beauty and youthfulness while avoiding any visible signs of surgery. It is important to me to help my patients look and feel their best while maintaining their unique appearance.”

When performed by a skilled surgeon like Dr Koutroumanos, eyelid lift surgery will help you achieve a younger look while preserving your unique facial features. A correctly performed blepharoplasty should be virtually undetectable to others, with no scars or other signs that you’ve had any surgery.

Extremely excellent from start to finish. Very subtle change to my eye that has completely transformed my face and life. I researched for a long time to find Dr Koutroumanos and very pleased with my choice – can recommend him with absolute confidence

4. Will my eyes look symmetrical after a blepharoplasty?

Each eye heals differently, so a tiny degree of asymmetry might be measurable following eyelid lift surgery. This is normal, even without having an operation, we are all born with some level of natural asymmetry. However, with careful pre-op measurements and skillful surgery, Dr Koutroumanos explains that, “chances are you’re going to end up being more symmetrical afterward than you ever were before.”

The measurements taken by a surgeon with specific Oculoplastic training like Dr Koutroumanos are extremely precise. In your initial consultation, Dr Koutroumanos will take measurements under high magnification with you sitting upright so that the effects of gravity can be taken into account. Further measurements are taken with you lying down.

Together with a careful assessment of your unique anatomy and your specific concerns, you will receive a highly individualised surgical plan optimised to achieve both symmetry and a refreshed, youthful and bright outcome.

An absolutely amazing surgeon. He immediately puts you at ease. I have had a life changing result with my perfect painless upper lid blepharoplasty. Absolutely symmetrical result !I am an Optometrist myself and I will most definitely always recommend Nick

5. Is a blepharoplasty painful?

Many people are understandably concerned about experiencing pain during surgery. Dr Koutroumanos wants to reassure you that a blepharoplasty is not painful during the procedure or immediately afterwards.

“Your anaesthetic plan will be tailored to your preferences and needs. The surgery can be performed in the office with or without sedation, or with total anaesthesia. We take every precaution to minimise discomfort and most of our patients find the procedure to be smooth and comfortable.”

Pain during recovery is rare, however some people may experience some discomfort for the first few days after the surgery. In some cases, taking paracetamol can help alleviate any discomfort.

The staff at Clinic LOOP are there to support you on your recovery journey. “Our team will provide detailed instructions on how to prepare for the surgery and how to ensure a smooth recovery. We will also be available to offer guidance and support throughout the entire process.”
